The Doraemon tram

The Doraemon tram (日本語)

Doraemon Tram service now operating in Takaoka!

Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture is the hometown to the much beloved creator of ‘Doraemon’, Fujiko. F. Fujio, and is where Fujio spent his youth before moving to Tokyo to become a professional Manga writer and illustrator.

The City of Takaoka is working hard to ensure that more and more people are able to experience the enchantment and wonder found within the pages of the highly acclaimed writer’s work.

Born in the year 2112, Doraemon, the blue gadget cat is sent back in time to try and change the less than bright future which lies in store for Noby; a young boy struggling with the problem of bullying and consistently poor grades at school.

In celebration of 100 years before the birth of our beloved, robotic feline friend, the Doraemon Tram was designed and first made its debut on the Manyo Line tramlines on 8th September 2012.

The Doraemon Tram proved to be a massive hit among the passengers of the Manyo Line, with passenger numbers reaching one hundred thousand by 6th May 2013. A commemorative ceremony was held in celebration of the tram’s popularity. It was during the celebration that the exciting news that the length of the Doraemon Tram service would be extended until August 2015 was announced!

On 8th September 2013, the Doraemon Tram celebrated its first birthday and passengers aboard were issued with a special commemorative gift.

On 25th January 2014, the parents and children of Nomachi Kindergarten were invited to come along to a special celebratory event commemorating the tram’s first two hundred thousand passengers. A special Doraemon-themed event was held on 28th September of the same year in celebration of the Doraemon Tram welcoming its first three hundred thousand passengers aboard, as well as commemorating the tram’s second birthday!

It was then that Takaoka City was delighted to be able to announce that the Doraemon Tram service would continue until August 2018!

Fujiko F. Fujio’s wished to let all of the children in Japan know the importance of “dreams”, “aspirations”, “friendship”, “bravery”, and “curiosity” through his work, and it is through the Doraemon Tram, along with the cooperation of Fujio Productions, that we are able to continue to spread Mr. Fujio’s message right here from Takaoka City.

We look forward to welcoming you aboard the Doraemon Tram!

Exterior Design

The tram’s exterior was designed with a Doraemon motif with its sky-blue body, bright red ribbon and characteristic yellow bell.

Doraemon’s face is featured on the front windows on both ends of the tram; each featuring a slightly different expression.

Many of the other beloved characters which star in the long running series can also be seen featured on the side-windows of the tram.

The doors to the tram are modelled on one of Doraemon’s most famous gadgets, the “Anywhere Door”; a magical, pink door which transports its users anywhere across space and time. Upon the tram’s arrival, the Anywhere Door opens up and passengers are transported into the magical world of Doraemon.

Interior Design

A beautiful, blue sky is featured inside the train, where many familiar faces from the Doraemon series can be seen soaring in the sky above with their Hopters, welcoming guests abroad the tram.

The straps inside the tram are also designed to look like Doraemon and his sister Dorami.

Shizuka, Noby’s closest friend, and Noby’s tormentors, Big G and Sneech can also be seen flying in the bright blue sky of the train.

Measuring at 129.3cm tall, a life-sized silhouette of Doraemon can also be found within the tram.

Furthermore, many of Doraemon’s gadgets from the future can also be seen inside the tram, along with Doraemon’s favorite fudgy pudgy pie!
