〜The City of Trees, Culture, and Volunteers〜
1 Fort Wayne and Takaoka became Sister Cities on April 8th, 1977.
2 The Story Behind the Relationship:
In 1976, the City of Fort Wayne decided to celebrate the bicentennial by forming sister city relations with cities in other countries. After a deliberate search they decided upon Takaoka in a unanimous vote by the City Council.
In April of 1977, Mayor Armstrong led a delegation of 42 people to Takaoka, where they signed the Sister City Relationship Agreement.3 About Fort Wayne:
Fort Wayne is the second largest city in Indiana after Indianapolis. Located centrally between Chicago, Detroit, Toledo, Cincinatti, and other major midwestern cities, it is an integral part of the commercial and industrial belt surrounding the Great Lakes, and also part of a grain-based agricultural region known as the "Golden Zone."
Fort Wayne is surrounded by fertile farmland and abundant greenery. It is home to many churches and a historical courthouse, a unique theater, and a national library housing some 80,000 volumes. The Fort Wayne Civic Theater puts on 7 productions a year and the Fort Wayne Philharmonic Orchestra performs 7 concerts a year. For these and many other reasons, it was declared an "All American City" in 1983 and 1998 and won the US Conference of Mayors' "Most Livable City" award in 1983.Area: 201 square kilometers Population: 250,000 people

6 Fort Wayne Sister Cities International (FWSCI)
Fort Wayne Sister Cities International is a nonprofit organization charged with maintaining the relationship between Fort Wayne and its Sister Cities. FWSCI maintains contact with each Sister City and plays a central role in various exchange programs between them and Fort Wayne.
